The ANON NFT Survival Index
What Makes an NFT Project Survive?
The NFT market has changed dramatically since the first major collections appeared.
In the early days, simply owning a scarce digital asset could be enough to create excitement. As the market matured, however, thousands of NFT projects appeared, many experienced enormous speculation, and countless collections disappeared when attention moved elsewhere.
Yet some projects continued.
Why?
What separates an NFT project that becomes part of digital history from one that disappears?
The ANON NFT Survival Index was created to explore that question.
Rather than judging NFT projects purely by floor price, trading volume or short-term popularity, the Survival Index examines the characteristics that may help an NFT project remain relevant through changing market conditions.
It is not designed to predict prices.
It is designed to measure survivability.
The Eight Survival Factors
The ANON NFT Survival Index scores projects out of 100 across eight categories.
1. Longevity — 15 Points
Time matters.
An NFT project that has survived several market cycles has demonstrated something that a new project simply cannot prove yet.
Longevity provides evidence of:
A new project should not receive the same longevity score as a project that has existed for many years.
This is intentional.
Survival has to be earned through time.
2. Identity & Brand — 15 Points
Successful NFT projects often become more than collections of images.
They can become identities.
CryptoPunks became associated with early crypto culture and digital identity.
Bored Ape Yacht Club developed a powerful community identity around ownership.
Pudgy Penguins expanded its characters into a recognisable brand.
The question therefore becomes:
Does owning the NFT actually mean something?
A strong identity can give holders a reason to remain connected to a project even when market conditions change.
For the Survival Index, identity includes:
3. Community — 15 Points
An NFT without a community can become little more than an abandoned contract.
Community is therefore one of the largest components of the Survival Index.
We look at:
A strong community creates something that cannot easily be replicated by another collection.
The strongest projects don’t simply have customers.
They have participants.
4. Economic Model — 15 Points
This is one of the most important categories.
Why does the NFT have economic relevance?
A project that relies entirely on someone else paying more for an NFT can be extremely vulnerable to changes in speculation.
The Survival Index therefore examines whether an NFT has economic functionality beyond simply being resold.
This can include:
This does not mean every successful NFT needs to be financially backed.
It means the project should have a clear answer to a fundamental question:
“Why does this NFT have value beyond the hope that someone else will pay more?”
5. Differentiation — 10 Points
The NFT market is crowded.
A project needs a reason to exist.
Differentiation measures whether a project has a meaningful proposition that separates it from thousands of alternatives.
This could come from:
The strongest projects don’t necessarily invent something completely new.
Sometimes they simply execute a familiar idea in a way that becomes distinctive.
6. Execution & Proof of Work — 10 Points
Ideas are easy.
Execution is difficult.
The Survival Index therefore measures what a project has actually done.
This includes:
This is particularly important for anonymous or pseudonymous projects.
When the creator’s identity is not the primary source of trust, actions become the reputation.
That is the philosophy behind the ANON Proof of Work approach.
7. Ecosystem & Expansion — 10 Points
A collection can survive.
An ecosystem can potentially become much harder to kill.
Projects with multiple connected products, collections, communities, experiences or revenue sources can have more ways to remain relevant.
The Survival Index therefore looks at:
The goal isn’t simply to create more NFTs.
The goal is to create more reasons for the existing ecosystem to matter.
8. Provenance & Transparency — 10 Points
NFTs are built on public blockchains, but transparency extends beyond the blockchain itself.
A project can build trust by documenting:
The Survival Index rewards projects that create a verifiable history.
Because years from now, the question may not simply be:
“What was this NFT?”
It may be:
“What actually happened here?”

Why isn’t ANON higher?
Because ANON is still young.
That matters.
A project cannot manufacture years of history.
It cannot simply declare itself culturally significant.
And it cannot claim to have survived multiple market cycles before actually doing so.
The ANON NFT Survival Index is intentionally designed to expose those weaknesses rather than hide them.
A 68/100 score means:
There are promising characteristics, but survival has not yet been proven.
Where ANON Is Strongest
ANON’s strongest areas are currently its economic model, differentiation and execution.
The project is exploring an alternative approach to NFT ownership through liquid NFT structures, redemption functionality, collection backing, holder rewards and an expanding ecosystem.
The objective isn’t to eliminate speculation.
The objective is to explore whether NFTs can provide meaningful value without being entirely dependent on finding a secondary buyer.
That creates a fundamentally different question.
Instead of:
“Who will buy my NFT next?”
ANON asks:
“What can my NFT actually do while I own it?”
The ANON Experiment
This is where the Survival Index becomes more than a score.
ANON is treating its own development as a live experiment.
The central question is:
Can an NFT ecosystem build lasting value by combining ownership, utility, economic functionality, transparency and community?
Nobody knows the answer yet.
ANON doesn’t claim to.
The project is documenting the attempt.
That distinction matters.
Survival vs Speculation
One of the biggest problems with evaluating NFTs is that market price can obscure the underlying strength of a project.
A high floor price doesn’t automatically mean a project will survive.
A low floor price doesn’t automatically mean it will disappear.
The Survival Index therefore separates two different concepts.
Survival
How many genuine reasons exist for a project to remain relevant?
Speculation
How dependent is the project on people expecting someone else to pay more?
The strongest long-term NFT projects may ultimately be those that can combine:
Cultural relevance + community + utility + economic functionality + longevity.
Speculation can exist alongside those characteristics.
But the goal is not to depend entirely upon it.
Why CryptoPunks Matters
CryptoPunks demonstrates the importance of longevity, identity and historical significance.
The collection launched in 2017 and became deeply associated with the early NFT movement.
Its significance today is not simply that the images are scarce.
It is that the collection has history.
That history cannot be recreated by launching another 10,000 NFTs today.
This is one of the most important lessons for newer projects:
Time itself can become part of the asset.
ANON therefore cannot simply copy the formula.
It has to build its own history.
Why Bored Ape Yacht Club Matters
Bored Ape Yacht Club demonstrated how an NFT collection can evolve into a broader community and ecosystem.
The lesson isn’t simply:
“Make a popular PFP.”
The more important lesson is:
Turn ownership into participation.
A successful NFT can become a membership, identity, community and brand.
ANON’s challenge is to develop its own version of that principle without simply copying another project’s culture.
Why CryptoKitties Matters
CryptoKitties demonstrated that NFTs could represent more than static artwork.
The project introduced interactive digital ownership to a huge audience and helped demonstrate the potential of blockchain-based digital assets.
The lesson:
NFTs become more interesting when ownership actually does something.
Why Art Blocks Matters
Art Blocks demonstrated how NFTs could become a new medium for generative digital art.
The project established a distinct category rather than simply competing with every other NFT collection.
The lesson for ANON:
Don’t try to own the NFT market.
Own a concept.
ANON’s emerging concept is:
NFT ownership that does not necessarily depend entirely on secondary-market resale.
Why Pudgy Penguins Matters
Pudgy Penguins demonstrates another important survival strategy:
Expand the reasons the brand exists.
The project has moved beyond the original NFT collection into broader intellectual property, licensing, products, retail and community experiences.
The lesson is simple:
An NFT becomes harder to kill when there are multiple reasons for people to care about it.
What ANON Needs to Improve
The Survival Index isn’t designed simply to celebrate strengths.
It identifies weaknesses.
ANON’s biggest current challenges are:
Longevity
ANON needs time.
There is no shortcut.
Community
The ecosystem needs to continue building a larger and more engaged holder base.
Provenance
The longer ANON documents its activity, the more valuable its historical record can become.
Ecosystem
Existing collections need to become increasingly connected rather than simply existing as separate projects.
The Long-Term Goal
ANON’s objective isn’t to reach 100/100.
A perfect score would be unrealistic.
The objective is to create a project that becomes progressively harder to dismiss.
Every year provides another opportunity to demonstrate:
The score should therefore evolve over time.
The ANON Survival Timeline

2027
Re-score.
2028
Re-score.
2029

2030

The methodology remains consistent.
The score changes according to the evidence.
If ANON improves, the score should rise.
If ANON fails to develop, the score should stagnate.
If ANON loses important characteristics, the score should fall.
No moving the goalposts.
A Public Commitment
ANON is not claiming that it has already achieved long-term NFT success.
It is claiming something much simpler:
It is willing to measure the attempt.
The Survival Index will remain a living framework.
The methodology can be challenged.
The scores can be challenged.
The conclusions can be challenged.
That is the point.
Because if the thesis is correct, ANON should eventually have years of evidence behind it.
And if the thesis is wrong, the experiment should reveal that too.
The Ultimate Question
NFTs have already demonstrated that digital objects can become culturally significant.
The next question may be whether NFTs can become economically functional forms of digital ownership.
Can an NFT offer utility?
Can it provide access?
Can it participate in an ecosystem?
Can it have redemption functionality?
Can it have economic backing?
Can it create community?
Can an anonymous creator build reputation through documented actions?
And ultimately:
Can an NFT become valuable without requiring somebody else to buy it from you?
ANON is attempting to find out.
